This is the home page of the free Bridges Handicap Race which is held at 12:30 on the second Wednesday of each month. If you are not sure when that is please click on the results tab for the date of the next race.
The course is 2.3 miles. The registration and start are by Westminster Bridge in front of St Thomas' Hospital on Albert Embankment. The start time is 12.30, the slowest first and fastest last. The course takes in both Vauxhall and Lambeth Bridges. It is excellent for working on your speed. There are no roads to cross so it is very safe. But we should emphasise that you run entirely at your own risk.
Your number lasts for life so please bring it with you. Your handicap is based on your time for the previous time you raced.
We welcome all runners from slow to fast. All we ask is that you are prepared to run for 2.3 miles. If the handicaps work right then everyone finishes together which makes it fun.
If you have not done the run before please contact us and tell us your name, date of birth, estimated time for 2.3 miles and club (or unattached) and we'll get a number and provisional handicap ready for you. We have a problem of success at present. We can't easily cope with more than 30 runners so we may have to hold you on a waiting list. But we will not turn away people who already have a number and who turn up on the day.
As from September 2013 we are also having to introduce a new rule. If you are not registered before the first runners have set off Paul will not be able to let you race. To get people off in good time and register those arriving late is not possible. Alternatively if you know you are going to race and want to register via email that will be fine. Paul can accept email entries up to 11.45am on the morning of the race.
The race is organised by a group of volunteers. After a while we'll ask you to "volunteer" to marshal. We hope you'll be able to but it's not compulsory. At the moment your turn comes round about every 18 months.
The race has a long history going back over 30 years and two of the original runners still race regularly.
